I confess that I have never been a fan of checklists or rubrics. It has always seemed like such overkill, too specific, and way too much work for the teacher. After having completed this course, my thinking has changed. Rubrics actually make grading a great deal easier. And it provides a way to be very effective and fair to the student. It is a very worthwhile practice.
I have put it into practice as well. As recent as two weeks ago, students in my class were given a checklist and rubric for a 1920s written and oral report project. They knew exactly what was expected of them and all I had to do was check off and assign points as they presented the oral portion and when I graded the written section. It proved to make the assessment much easier for me to evaluate and the grades were assessed so fairly.
I will definitely use checklists and rubrics to assist in assessment in the future. The accessible resources available online make the creation of individualized rubrics and checklists very convenient. There really is no excuse for teachers not to utilize these tools to create effective assessments that avoid unwanted sources of bias, interference, or error.
